Slow movie week for me. Only 3 new movies, and 2 rewatches.
5/6
Sleepaway Camp (rewatch, 1983, Robert Hiltzik, dvd) - 10
5/8
Satan's Little Helper (2004, Jeff Lieberman, dvd) - 8.5
Alexander Brickel from Palindromes is dressed up like Satan's Little Helper for Halloween, and he spots a serial killer dressed up like Satan doing some killing, and gets all excited and follows him around and actually becomes his little helper. It turns out Brickel (somehow) thinks the serial killer guy is only pretending to kill people, and he freaks out when he finds out it's all been real, but I thought it would've been a lot funnier if he had known all along and was just a sociopathic kid. And it could still be somewhat of a thriller in the last act because the kid may not care about others, but he doesn't want his family killed.
5/9
Teenage Twins (1976, Carter Stevens, download) - 9
Porn movie about the Necronomicon. Pretty ridiculous and awesome, with a great soundtrack, and features a scene with twin sisters getting it on.
Sugar & Spice (rewatch, 2001, Francine McDougall, dvd) - 9.5
5/10
28 Weeks Later... (2007, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, theater) - 7
Frequently relies on the plot device of keeping alive a dumb, reckless, annoying little kid, which is the most irritating plot device ever. Eventually, it's explained why the kid is actually important for reasons aside from just being young, and I felt better about things, and it pretty much makes up for all of it, anyway, with the ending. But I still felt like I had spent too much time annoyed while watching. It's an otherwise effective, scary thriller, though, with a decent amount of blood, and overall, I liked it.
Other
Book - The Dead Fathers Club by Matt Haig - 9
I've been obsessed lately with Doug Benson's I Love Movies podcast. It's no longer being recorded unfortunately, but I've been making my way through the 28 episodes that were. Of episodes 1-6 and 27-28, my favorites are episode 1 with Brian Posehn, episode 2 with Patton Oswalt, episode 3 with Maria Bamford, and episode 27 with Paul Scheer.
I also watched the Nightline debate between the Rational Response Squad (known for The Blasphemy Challenge, where they challenged people to send in videos of themselves on youtube denying the Holy Spirit (the only unforgivable sin)) and The Way of the Master (also famous on youtube for trying to prove God's existence by going down on a banana). I thought it was a pretty good debate. The atheists obviously won, but for their part, I thought Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort did surprisingly well, considering what they had to work with (a false premise). When I was talking about it later, I found myself making them out to sound retarded, and so I don't know, maybe they were, but I guess my expectations are so low that anytime a christian manages to come across as not being completely fucking psychotic, I'm impressed. If you want to watch it, you can find the entire thing here. Apparently, the televised version was really offensive and biased, so stay away from that one.
