1/1
Double Indemnity (1944, Billy Wilder, 35mm) - 9
This was a good movie to start the year off with.
The Lost Weekend (1945, Billy Wilder, 35mm) - 8
Pretty great depiction of alcoholism.
1/3
Wrong Turn (2003, Rob Schmidt, dvd) - 9
Awesome backwoods horror thriller.
1/5
Seven Samurai (1954, Akira Kurosawa, 35mm) - 6
Compelling enough through its 3+ hours and I guess I can see what people like about it, but it didn't do anything special for me.
1/6
Santa Claws (1996, John A. Russo, dvd) - 6
B movie with some decent performances. I liked the Santa suit spray-painted black.
The Condemned (2007, Scott Wiper, dvd) - 9
The plot is the best thing ever, but by the end, it really starts to overdo it with the moralism and over-the-top villainy of the reality show producer.
1/7
First Blood (rewatch, 1982, Ted Kotcheff, dvd) - 7
Solid.
Rambo: First Blood Part 2 (1985, George P. Cosmatos, dvd) - 4
I had no idea nonstop explosions could be so boring.
Rambo III (1988, Peter MacDonald, dvd) - 5
Slightly better than the second one, with a couple isolated moments of awesomeness.
1/9
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2007, Scott Glosserman, dvd) - 7.5
I'm surprised "Man Bites Dog meets Scream" isn't plastered all over the DVD cover, because there is little in this movie not taken from those two. That's not a bad thing, and I still liked this movie, but I know I would've liked it a great deal more had it felt more original. Or if it had at least gone a lot farther as a slasher movie.
1/10
No Country for Old Men (rewatch, 2007, Joel and Ethan Coen, 35mm) - 9
I loved this a lot when I first saw it, and it'll most likely make my Top 10 list for the year, but when it started showing up as #1 on so many critics' lists, I began to wonder if maybe I was missing something and I didn't love it enough. And then when even people on my Friends List started listing it as #1, I knew I had to watch it again. But I felt pretty much exactly the same about it the second time around. Fucking great, but not like omg fucking great.
I also watched the first 5 episodes of Dexter a few weeks ago, and it's doubtful I'll keep going. It was ok, but I was really disappointed with how fucking tame it was. So, hey, fans of the show, should I keep going? Does it get better? Because it seems like everyone who loves it pretty much loved it immediately.
