Reviews (10/18, two double features at Castro, plus midnight at Clay)

10/18

Horror of Dracula (1958, Terence Fisher, 35mm) - 7.5
Dracula wants to turn Lucy into a vampire, but Van Helsing would prefer he didn't. This is the first Hammer film I've seen, and it was good.
Poster: I like it. - 7.5

Hollywood and the Stars: Monsters We've Known and Loved (1964, tv episode, 35mm) - 8
Between movies, they showed this tv special from the 60's about famous movie monsters and the actors who frequently played them. It was really good.
Poster: This is dumb, but the sprocket holes bug me because there's five of them on each side when there should be four. - 3

The Curse of Frankenstein (1957, Terence Fisher, 35mm) - 8
Tells the story of Dr. Frankenstein, starting in adolescence, when he hired a tutor who eventually became his partner in science, and then in his adult life, he became obsessed with making a perfect man out of corpse parts and bringing him to life. This one was really good, too. Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee were both great.
Poster: Awesome. You get to see the splendor of Christopher Lee's makeup, plus the tagline "The Curse of Frankenstein will haunt you forever!" and my favorite part, "Please try not to faint." - 9.5

Night of Dark Shadows (1971, Dan Curtis, 35mm) - 6
A couple moves into a house, and it's haunted by the man's mistress from a past life. I liked it ok, but it didn't really hold my attention too well. Between movies, two of the Dark Shadows actresses (Kathryn Leigh Scott and Lara Parker) were interviewed onstage and it was pretty amazing because they clearly hated each other, and Lara Parker kept rolling her eyes at everything Kathryn Leigh Scott said, especially when she said anything positive about Dan Curtis, who Parker apparently didn't get along with.
Poster: "Her return from the grave is just the beginning of their lust" is one of the best taglines I've ever heard. - 9

House of Dark Shadows (1970, Dan Curtis, 35mm) - 7.5
Willie Loomis frees Barnabas from his tomb, and Barnabas tries to turn Maggie Evans because she reminds him of someone, and Grayson Hall tries to cure his vampirism. It was pretty good.
Poster: I like it. - 8

Zombie (rewatch, 1979, Lucio Fulci, 35mm) - 10
Some people go to an island that has zombies on it. I love this movie a whole fucking lot. I'm pretty sure I would've liked the 4 previous movies a lot more if I hadn't been in such eager anticipation of a big-screen viewing of Zombie's eye-gouging scene. It was extremely exciting.
Poster: One of my favorites. It's amazing. - 10
